What other country sells Boom Boom Ice Cream? How does it taste? Don’t ask! It sold out each time I tried to buy it. Not that I’m much of an Ice cream person. The flavour does sound intriguing. Regrettably, I've missed that scoop.

The catchy tourist logo here is “More Fun in the Philippines!” When you consider “Fun!” as a colloquial expression for casual sex, it is quite an insightful logo.

China Unveiled.

Wow! Cuckold! A term I’d not heard in ages, aren’t cuckolds extinct? Whatever happened to honest-to-goodness emasculated wife-dominated husbands? They must be here in China.

My first China Winter. I still shiver at the thought!

“Chicken”, a female prostitute. “Chicken Farm”, a brothel, “Chicken Farm Road” a street lined with brothels, all illegal in China. “Duck”, is obviously enough gigolo. A lesson in the local lingo to help understand the simmering hostility between the sexes.

Storm's Adult Male Madness

Taxi Driver Jack Storm has never married and boasts so. He leads a colourful, carefree, and often mischievous life. Friends beware! Exaggerations, pranks, storytelling, and rumours abound. Storm’s friends and the truth are his traditional victims. Remarkably, his friends, including ex-girlfriends, remain longstanding. Several good friends go back to their primary school days. I’ve known Jack since we were neighbours back in the mid-eighties. I hope you enjoy his explicit, colourful podcasts.

Higgins’ quest for the woman he admires remains on hold until the Queen Bee’s current partner passes on. Does a lovesick man(?) who places a woman on a pedestal deserve our support? Luckily for Higgins, his good friend, taxi driver Storm, offers advice and support. Would you want Storm to support you?

Taxi Driver Storm shares stories of colourful passengers. Do you remember Tony and the family home in “Saturday Night Fever”? And regular blow-out middle-aged Mummy's boy, Aussie Tony. And a single Mum at war with her neighbours; an extremely colourful fare. And Storm continues to support Higgins. How would you advise the lovesick Higgins? Be warned! Adults-only, colourful content.

Toyota. Happy Together Advert (2006).

Toyota, the world’s leading car manufacturer and a highly trusted brand in Australia, produces impactful advertisements. "Happy Together" (2006) was a classroom favourite in China, igniting spirited discussions between male and female students. The website’s theme? Exploring tension and dysfunction in evolving gender relationships. Maybe not? Marital violence? Or exaggerated marital competitiveness?

My Chinese students predominantly came from marital homes. Although divorce is relatively easy in China, it remains uncommon in households with student children. However, students were well aware of marital tensions within their families and among cousins and close friends. Positive examples of marital tension often involved their parents, while negative examples included aunts, uncles, or neighbours. Domestic shouting matches are not uncommon in densely populated high-rise apartments.

The class consensus after heated gender-based debate. Good marriages navigate tension primarily through mutual respect and compromise. Dysfunctional marriages often lack respect from one partner, whether male or female. Common grievances from mothers about their husbands included excessive alcohol consumption, insufficient salary or promotion at work, infidelity, and lack of interest in the children. Conversely, husbands commonly complained about their wives’ jealousy, recurring grievances thought to be previously resolved, and accusations regarding the treatment of her parents.

I often used television adverts to evoke descriptive English usage from students. Adverts are short videos, and students prefer videos to textbooks any day. Generic terms such as “beautiful,” “delicious,” and “wonderful” permeated every English sentence. These words were banned, and the class dived for translation devices to express themselves.

Women in our lives play diverse roles that mostly enrich our existence. Nurturing loving mothers, and sisters who stand by us like brothers, each relationship a unique thread in the tapestry of our lives. Aunts shower us with affection, often like a second mother or older sister. While the bonds we form with our mates' wives and girlfriends can blossom into enduring friendships. And let's not forget the female schoolmates from yesteryears, strong enduring links with a history we share.

But our romantic, marital relationships, dynamics change, and often don't work out. A universal experience that many of us can relate to, regardless of gender. Communication gaps, differing expectations, and life's unpredictable twists and turns, make for a difficult, convoluted, tangled dance.

Disastrous encounters and marriages often appear to be the norm, but I have two cousins happily married to high school sweethearts. And several high school friends the same. Soul mates are out there somewhere. But where? At the end of a rainbow? It’s a question for many of us. Or have we given up? Platonic friendships with beer, wine and food. How does that sound to you?

What do you infer from “No Tossing”? A frequent sign encountered when teaching English in China for several years. Chinese, provincial folk especially are notorious for littering, and discarding objects from cars, buses, overpasses, and buildings. Who wants to carry rubbish around? Street cleaners abound in China. Help keep them employed.

The Western history of “Tosser” originates from the British slang “Toss Off,” which refers to masturbation, particularly chronic masturbation. It has since morphed to describe stupidity, bullshitters, or someone too full of themselves, displacing the term “wanker” in many English-speaking regions. Examples? Politicians readily come to mind. You agree or want to suggest others?

My inquisitive Chinese college students would likely be curious or more to the point enlightening if this advert were presented to the class. Let me assure you that once I won their confidence the shy, reticent veneer disappeared. In one instance a male student asked a female student out front fielding questions from classmates as part of the oral assessment.

‘Do you believe in 3P?’

‘Not with you!’ Her curt reply.

Wow! The UK Toyota advert would not make it to television screens in 2024, especially not in the UK. The world has changed since 2003, and some argue not for the better. The UK advert exhibits a Freudian approach, whereas the American “Happy Together” advert leans towards a behaviourist approach. This difference is similar to the contrast between British and American comedy shows. Any thoughts on my observation?

A further consideration, one or two students might complain to their parents or the college. You never know who your enemies might be behind a wall of smiling faces.

And! Why open Pandora’s Box? Questions, explanations, and accusations aimed at me; maximum class participation. Alas, a topic I’m not qualified in? Not a good idea!

Another female student sitting close to me noticed my blank look. ‘Teacher Gary! 3P means three people's sex. You understand?’

‘Thanks for the hint.’ I smiled back.
